Ithaca College African Students Association Fights Stereotypes about Africa<\/p>\n
\u201cAfrica is not a country\u201d is not a new concept, but this statement and others have possibly never found such beautiful representation than the work of Ithaca College African Students Association and their campaign titled \u201cThe Real Africa: Fight the Stereotype\u201d in a bid to dispel myths about Africa.<\/p>\n
Featured on the\u00a0CNN website,<\/a> \u201cThe Real Africa\u201d aims to challenge stereotypes with beautifully crafted colourful portraiture and factual information in response to numerous false statements stemming from myths and misconceptions about Africa. \u201cAll African look alike\u201d and \u201cAfrica is a country\u201d are only a couple of the many false beliefs about Africa challenged by this campaign.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat we wanted to do was embrace the individual flags of the countries of Africa,\u201d Rita Bunatal, head of PR for the organisation said to CNN\u2019s Theo Kermeliotis, adding, \u201cWe wanted to show the beauty and the power of the flag. We also wanted to break one of the biggest misconceptions about the continent, which is that Africa is a country.\u201d\u00a0The images for \u201cThe Real Africa\u201d shot and edited by Mariah Boucher each photograph show the students posing wrapped in flags of various African countries to create vibrant visuals. Each image also has quotes from the students such as\u00a0 \u201cAfrica is not a land filled with diseases\u201d and\u00a0\u201dI don\u2019t speak \u2018African\u2019 because \u2018African\u2019 is not a language\u201d and factual information in support of these statements.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Real Africa\u201d campaign was introduced on the\u00a0Ithaca College African Students Association Facebook page\u00a0with the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n This campaign aims to educate and create awareness about our beautiful continent.
