Follow our advice on healthy eating\u00a0for vegetarians and vegans to ensure you have a balanced and varied diet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, you should eat a wide variety of foods and have a healthy balanced diet<\/a> to ensure you get all the nutrients your body needs.<\/p>\n

Vegetarians and vegans don\u2019t eat any meat<\/a>, poultry, game, fish<\/a>, shellfish or crustacea (such as crab or lobster) or animal by-products (such as gelatine).<\/p>\n

Vegetarians eat a diet of grains, pulses<\/a>, nuts, seeds, fruit and vegetables<\/a>, dairy products<\/a> and eggs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Vegetarians who also don\u2019t eat eggs and dairy products are called vegans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some people who call themselves vegetarians may eat different combinations of these foods. For example, some may consume milk but not eggs, while some may eat fish but not meat.<\/p>\n

There are three main types of vegetarian:<\/p>\n

Lacto-ovo vegetarians<\/h3>\n

  • Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat both dairy products and eggs. This is the most common type of vegetarian diet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Lacto vegetarians<\/h3>\n

    • Lacto vegetarians eat dairy products but not eggs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Vegans<\/h3>\n

      • Vegans\u00a0don’t eat dairy products, eggs or any other animal product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Around 2% of the UK population is vegetarian, which is more than 1.2 million people. Teenagers make up the highest proportion.<\/p>\n

        A vegetarian or vegan diet can be suitable for everyone, regardless of their age.\u00a0However, you may need to\u00a0consider specific needs at different stages of life, for example if you’re pregnant.
